5 Ways to Find Business Builders in Direct Sales

If you looked around at every leader in the room, they each have similar character traits. 

Usually, your ideal business builders have a few things in common.. Which means when you look at recruiting through the lens of leadership qualities, it works as a natural filter. 

While recruiting can be a sensitive topic in direct sales and even kind of cringry in some crowds… it’s also an incredible opportunity and a gift you get to offer to someone else.

No matter your recruiting skill level… Consumer patterns have changed in 2023, and if you want to truly build the team of your dreams it might be time to do things a little differently!

Recruiting is something that used to be a challenge for me… 

I was scared to talk about what I did for a living, because I just assumed no one would be interested. I didn’t truly see the value of what I had to offer until a year or so after I started my business.

On average my first 2 years in direct sales I recruited one person a month…. In other words, my team wasn’t growing at all and I was barely maintaining my leadership rank.

Fast forward a few years in my journey and I attended a training that taught me the power of playing the numbers game! This was a HUGE help, because I knew that if I asked enough people someone would eventually say yes.

While this was beneficial and my team did grow… I started to plateau again! I was frustrated because I couldn’t figure out what all these other people were doing that I wasn’t doing. 

Then, I was asked to speak on stage at our company’s National Conference and a light bulb went off.

I had to combine my tracking and number philosophy with connection and trust.

From that moment on, I started looking for people I knew would be good at what I do and went after them! I wasn’t scared anymore. I had a burst of confidence and started to recognize I had the skill set and authority to teach others how to do what I had done with my business.

It changed the game for me and my organization!

We went from recruiting a few in a month… to 40-50 in a month.

My personal recruiting went from 11 in a year to 33 in a year. Then, 58 in just a few months!

AND — I’m going to share with you just a few of the things I did to make this happen…


1.Make a list of qualities that you’d like to see in leaders on your team.

It’s interesting because the more lasered focused I became with finding people that I wanted to work with vs. people that were desperate for money or a discount.. I started to attract a more leveled up person.

2. Niche down!

Yes, this business can be for everyone, but usually the problem that is/was solved for you is what you can relate the most to and truly help someone else overcome. So, start speaking to that person in your content.

Here are some examples of caption starters that speak to that person…

“I remember when…”

“I was too scared to say yes.”

“I can’t believe what just happened.”

“I wish I had known this in ___ (insert year or timeframe you started: 2015 / when the girls were little / the fall / etc.)”

“No one told me this would happen.”

3. Consistency builds trust.

I’m going to be singing this until I go to the grave! You can’t post about your business every now and then and expect someone to think of you when they need what you sell.

4. Know your numbers and track them!

One of the biggest reasons people get discouraged when it comes to recruiting is they forget that it’s simple math! They let someone else’s “no” become their future success.

They begin thinking things like…

“I’m not a recruiter.”

“Everyone says no to me.”

“This business must not be for me because I can’t find anyone to sign up.”

“I don’t want to pester people if they are just going to say no.”

When in reality.. even though everyone may benefit from your business.. it’s not truly for everyone. So, you have to focus on weeding out the people who don’t need it or want it and focus on finding the people who do.

If you don’t ask, the answer will always be no.

That’s why you need to find a simple system to track your numbers so you know how many people you need to have conversations with before you get the YES!

5. The fortune is in the follow up.

When I think back to what I did to get a few of my jobs, almost every time it was a result of me following up until I was given an interview.

The summer before going to college my best friend got a job at Victoria’s Secret, and I wanted to work there too, because who doesn’t love free bras and to hang out at the mall with their best friend.

She told me to come apply in person and ask for the manager. Of course, I did that but was told we will call you and let you know.

I waited a few days and then went back up to the store and asked for the manager again. I did this 3 other times. Eventually, I was able to speak with her and told her I was looking for a seasonal job to make some money before going to college and I would love to be considered. She pretty much hired me on the spot and said she meant to call and appreciated me stopping by.

I did the exact same thing with my teaching job before my oldest was born.

If I hadn’t been persistent and consistent with following up I might have missed out on so many opportunities.

So, if you’re not following up… consider this your sign to start doing it!
