Episode 1: My Story
Hey friends! I am incredibly excited to be sharing my journey as a mompreneur. The Good, The Bad, and all the messy and magical moments in between.
My goal for this podcast is to create a space that inspires you to reach for more! Whether you are just starting your social selling business or looking to grow into something more… I pray my experiences in this space will motivate you and re-ignite your passion for this industry.
If you're just now stumbling upon my little corner of the internet, allow me a moment to introduce myself.
My name is Becky and I love to create! I guess you could say that part of me had been tucked away for a while.
In order for me to explain this to you… we need to travel back in time about 13 years ago.
Before graduating college I met and married an incredibly amazing man. Trust me when I say we have had our fair share of problems. We both struggle with diseases that have truly wreaked havoc on our lives.
Upon graduating we moved to Tennessee and both started working. I began my career teaching Kindergarten. One of the many reasons I LOVED to teach was I could create. I loved to come up with fun and engaging ways to teach my kiddos a skill while having fun in the classroom. After all- I myself was a life-long learner. I honestly thought I would spend my entire adult career in the classroom. Boy does God have a sense of humor!
I taught for 4 years in Kindergarten and after our sweet girl Sara was born I quickly realized I wanted to be home with her. Motherhood was everything I wanted- yet so much more than I ever imagined. I got lost in diapers, exhaustion and anxiety. I couldn't handle the thought of going back to the classroom. There I said it... I didn't want to be away from my baby.
Looking back.. who knows.. maybe I was dealing with postpartum depression, but I was also battling the onset of an autoimmune disease. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis a few years after she was born but it was very obvious I was dealing with all the symptoms after Sara was born. It was very depressing watching so many other mothers have significantly more energy than me and I felt like I needed a nap everyday to simply survive and care for my baby girl.
I had no clue when I started my direct sales business that I was dealing with MS.
When I went to that party all those years ago God was preparing me for something I didn't know I wanted or needed.
During my time home I finished my masters degree from Lipscomb University in Instructional Technology, I taught through a virtual school for a while and even continued to create digital products to sell on a website called Teachers Pay Teachers - side bar - if you’re an educator looking for more income this is a great place to start! I created my store 11 years ago and I am still making money on things I added to it in the very beginning. That’s why digital resources are so profitable. Ok back to my story..
I loved being mommy, but needed something to push for, something to contribute and something to call my own. I suppose I didn't realize how much my desire to bloom was being smothered during this time.
Being a mommy is HARD!
I don't care what angle you are coming from.. whether you work out of the home and put your sweet baby in daycare or stay home all day and barely get time for a shower.
It's exhausting.
There came a time when I knew I needed something...
Something for ME.
So, I became a Pampered Chef consultant.
I know what you’re thinking.. Ummm random! Do you like to cook or something?? Umm no not really! In fact my husband does most of the cooking. He actually really enjoys it!
I enjoy the entertaining part of it. Gathering around the table with family and loved ones. Sharing a meal or glass of wine while sharing memories. That’s what I loved about it.
But I happened to be in the right place at the right time.
Sounds kind of cheesy.. But I firmly believe you can be successful in ANY direct sales, network marketing or social selling business if you have 3 things: 1. A good leader or someone to help you pave the road and know where to go. 2. Consistent systems 3. Purpose & Perseverance.
If you have someone successful teaching you what they did to lead to success you’re less likely to make as many mistakes because they can help you streamline what you need to focus on instead of wavering from the path.
You also need consistent systems, I heard someone once say, “ You are as successful as your systems.” This is 100% true! When people ask me how I have been able to have success and so quickly.. I share it always comes back to my consistency with systems.
Finally, purpose & perseverance. You have to look at this industry like a marathon and not a sprint. There is no such thing as a get rich quick opportunity and if there is.. It’s probably not the real deal or it’s like a negative percent chance it will work. There will be times when it seems like what you’re doing isn’t working or not paying off. But when a runner slows its pace during a marathon at mile 12.. They don’t stop because they slowed down. They continue to keep going because they know where they are headed.
Well, remember when I said I was in the right place at the right time.
I was invited to a cooking show where I met my upline and leader Stephanie. She had been with the company for many years and had extreme success! I knew if I could learn from her what to do - I could have success too!
I was desperate to find a way to stay home with Sara and I knew if I could just make $1,000 a month to contribute to our expenses I could continue to stay home.
So, a few months later I signed up and started doing just that! I didn’t do much more and truly enjoyed my time home with my oldest.
Aside from my consistency, systems and perseverance, one thing everyone should do regardless of their profession is to continue to sharpen their skills, learn from others and find new techniques and resources to add to their tool belt. And I did just that- from the very beginning I attended every single training opportunity from both my leader and our home office. I was determined to be successful and continue to stay home.
Not until a few years into it did I realize I wanted to have more with my business, but wasn’t exactly sure what to do. I knew so many people who had risen to the top of the company, but many of these leaders rook years and years to accomplish this. I didn’t want to wait that long and knew there had to be someone out there who had done it quickly. I became a student of the business. I started to google, search on pinterest, watch youtube videos, listen to podcasts, and learned from literally anyone who I could find that was having success in Direct Sales.
I knew what this business had done for me and my family and I was eager to prove to others what it could do for them as well!
About halfway through my journey we had another beautiful baby girl Evelyn. She truly rocked our world - more on motherhood and business in another episode. She truly challenged me and taught me how to be very efficient while running on fumes with a newborn.
All during this time my husband and I struggled in our marriage. We had fights about finances constantly - even to the point of a blow out fight over shampoo and conditioner. I swore to myself that I would find a way to increase my income so he could never question what I was buying and boy did I do that.
Of course, he is very supportive and has been from the beginning. But marriage is very hard when you aren’t even out of college when you get married, trying to start a career, have a family and figure out both of our health issues.
I was desperate to find FREEDOM!
Freedom to live a life that I didn't need or want a vacation from. I wanted to make an income while making an impact in the lives of more than just my little circle. The Direct Sales Business had truly transformed my life and I knew if I could help others have success I would reach all of my goals as well.
You see... When you are laser focused on a dream. Nothing can stop you!
I wanted to stay home and be near my girl. That was my dream and my why. I knew I needed an income and figured if others can be successful in direct sales- WHY NOT ME?
This my friends.. is when it all began.
My life forever changed in ways I never imagined.
Fast forward 6 years, and I was at the TOP of the career plan with Pampered Chef. When I promoted to the National Level I was overwhelmed with excitement but also exhaustion. It was a wild ride. One that I will always be thankful I went on. I turned into a confident leader and developed so many skills I never knew I was capable of learning or doing.
But if you’ve ever heard someone say the words.. Focus on your why.. That will keep you motivated. While this is true for many people.. It can also create burn out when you achieve your specific goal. What more is there to reach for after you hit your goal? Or when your why changes?
The year I promoted to the National level was the year I gained 60 pounds, my blood pressure began to spike, my mental health was struggling, my family was suffering, I was dealing with some major MS relapses and I lost my love for what I had built. It had turned into a job. And while I will FOREVER be a champion for the company and support my incredible team and the many consultants who I trained and developed.. I realized it was time for a change for me. I needed to focus on my health and find my purpose. I have always had a love for education, and naturally when you deal with an autoimmune disease a podcast is the perfect outlet for me to educate. I don’t have to put on make-up, I don’t have to clean my office, and I can show up in my stretchy pants and no one knows!
I am finally at a place where I'm evaluating what is next in my life.. I know that I want to create at least 7 streams of revenue and the majority of them be passive, but that doesn’t happen overnight. I currently have a few already and I’m launching a new business alongside this podcast. I am very excited to share more of that with you, but I will save it for another day.
I hope you stick around to hear how I grew into an influential leader of a multi-million dollar team.
